- You will find your made-to-measure hanbok useful on many occasions: For wedding ceremonies; on pyebaek (formal greetings made by the bride to the parents-in-law), and; on sinhaeng (a newly-married couple paying the first visit to their bride’s parents). It will also be a good idea for them to appear in hanbok on special events held within a year of the wedding for either side of the family. The following are tips for those purchasing hanbok for the occasion of their wedding:
- Hanbok - Basics

-
Hanbok worn at the wedding is not different from that worn on other occasions. If you already have one not particularly outdated, wear it. Usually, a couple getting married purchase (or have it made to measure) one set each for themselves, and their mothers.
Basically, a set of hanbok for the bride comprises of a piece for a ceremonial occasion, one for outings, and durumagi. Recently, they tend to prepare only one for ceremonial occasions and outings plus semi-durumagi.
A complete set of hanbok should include: an underskirt, under-trousers, jeoksam (summer jacket), shoes, beoseon (socks) and trinkets.
A set of hanbok for the bridegroom is comprised of trousers, a jacket, vest and magoja (upper garment worn over the jacket). Durumagi is optional, but must be worn at formal occasions.
- Color combination between upper and lower garments

-
It is necessary to pay attention to the color combination between the skirt or trousers and jacket, to present a refined appearance, and so as to not become tired of it too soon. It is usually fine to choose a blue skirt and light green jacket or jade-colored jacket. A deep-red skirt and pink jacket are also good. If you want give an impression of liveliness, choose yellow and blue.
- Selection of materials

-
Artificial and natural fibers are used as materials for the outer fabric of hanbok. Artificial fiber is divided into recycled fiber and synthetic fiber, and natural fiber into cotton, hemp, wool and satin. Synthetic fiber is not recommendable, as it has poor air permeability and moisture absorption. Satin is usually selected for the outer fabric of hanbok purchased for weddings. It is cool in summer and warm in winter, in addition to having good moisture absorption. It also feels light and pleasant, and looks attractive. You should choose a garment with good inner lining as well as outer fabric. In hanbok, inner lining helps soften the lines of the outer fabric and enliven its color, unlike those in western suits. Silk thread, fine gauze and loosely woven thread are usually used for the inner lining.
