- New York is termed the economic and cultural capital of the world. A museum displaying traditional culture of Korea and publicizing the beauty of hanbok was opened in September 2004 on 32nd Street of Manhattan in the heart of the metropolis through the help of the Korean-American community and lovers of the country’s traditional culture.
- The museum displays 100 items of works contributed by Lee Young-hee, a world-famous hanbok designer, and a collection of rare items of Korean culture contributed by other dignitaries. It works to change the theme of the display on an annual basis.
- Cultural performance events and lectures on Korean traditional culture held here have also gained popularity. Korean traditional artists in New York hold performances in a space on the second floor of the museum from 10:00 ? 12:00 pm Friday through Sunday. Visitors are given an opportunity to experience a traditional Korean tea ceremony and view films relating to the natural scenery of Korea, they can also enjoy performances of the country’s traditional arts and fashion shows.
- Lectures on Korean traditional culture are held in each spring and fall for younger generations of Korean-Americans and foreigners. Its contents include: how to wear hanbok correctly; how to select hanbok for special occasions; how to make jogakbo (traditional patchwork); the performance of the tea ceremony; Zen meditation; acupuncture and moxibustion.
The museum contributes greatly in helping foreigners understand things uniquely Korean. - Location of the museum: 2 West 32nd St., Suite 301 New York, NY, 10001
