Andong is a treasure trove of the country’s traditional culture and heritage. The following is an introduction to the hanji factory:

Hanji, Korean traditional paper, known for its amazing durability, has become the focus of considerable attention. Having started the business 20 years ago, the factory in Pungsan, Andong attracts an endless line of visitors wishing to see the process in which hanji is made. Recently, around 1,500 people have been visiting the factory every day on average.
Hanji is manufactured in the following way: The branches of mulberry trees are put into a large pot full of water. After 10 hours of boiling, the bark is separated from the wood and dried. Black cuticles are removed. The remaining portion is put into a bowl of caustic soda for bleaching. Then, hanji is made in the process of drying it.
Visitors can enjoy a cup of tea and see how janji, hanji yarn textile and hanji handcrafts are made at the factory. The factory has become a must-see attraction for visitors to Hahoe Village.
In 2008, the total number of foreign visitors to the factory reached over 500,000.
At these facilities, visitors can take part in the production of hanji, hanji masks, hanji handcrafts/household articles or traditional patterns. (Hours: 9:00 am ~ 6:00 pm / Reservation is required.)
Please contact Andong Hanji Factory (82-54-858-7007).
