  • Hanji (traditional Korean paper) craft is divided into 5 major styles ? Jijang, Saekji, Huji, Jiho, and Jiseung ? depending on the different techniques used in the process. Some say that the Jiseung technique was derived from the tradition of literary men who recycled the paper from old books. Paper was very valuable in the old days, and it is highly likely that people’s reluctance to throw away even the smallest pieces of paper led to the development of Hanji craft.
  • Rectangular Chest
    Jijang Craft
The basic frame is constructed with pieces of wood or bamboo rings, and then covered with several layers of paper, both inside and outside. Sometimes, the craftwork is completed when the paper dries, while at other times, different inscriptions or paintings were made on the surface.
e.g. Pencil Case, Rectangular Sewing Box, Octagonal Sewing Box, Accessory Box, Rectangular Chest, etc.
  • Color Paper Fan
    Saekji Craft
The basic frame is constructed with several layers of hanji and covered with saekji (colored hanji). Then, various designs are cut out and glued onto the surface for decoration. Saekji is made by dyeing hanji into one of five colors - blue, red, white, black, and yellow - using natural ingredients.
e.g. Box Trio, Octagonal Tray, Waste Bin, Color Paper Fan, etc.
  • Dodecagonal Sewing Box
    Huji Craft
The technique of putting together several layers of paper to create a thick surface is called huji. The thick paper is folded into different shapes to create various objects, and the surface is sometimes decorated by adding a different texture. The finished product acquires a texture similar to that of leather once the lacquer has dried.
e.g. Dodecagonal Sewing Box, Seed Box
  • Bowl
    Jiho Craft
Pounding a mixture of shredded paper, water, and glue for a long time makes sticky paper paste. Successive coats of paste are then applied to a frame and dried a little at a time. Once the desired thickness has been reached, the frame is separated, and lacquer is applied to the surface.
e.g. Sewing Box, Bowl, Box, Paper Doll
  • Chamber Pot
    Jiseung Craft
Paper ribbons are twisted and knotted together. Different types of knots determine the object’s shape, and sometimes saekji is used to create different patterns. The technique offers considerable flexibility to the overall shape and design of the outcome.
e.g. Whip, Jiseung Wallet, Chamber Pot, Jiseung Snapping Turtle-shaped Bottle (Wine Bottle), Jiseung Daeraeki (Basket)
