Hanguk-Eumak can be defined as the music made by Koreans with traditional musical instruments to express the ethos of the Korean people.
samul nori
Hanguk-eumak can be divided into two categories; one is the traditional music, called gugak (`national music'), transmitted for centuries, and the other is newly-composed music, called changjak gugak (`newly-composed national music') which has been developed by the influence of Western music although it is performed by traditional musical instruments.
One of the representative Korean musical genres, samul nori (percussion quartet) is not a traditional musical genre but was created for the stage music in 1978. In this sense, samul nori can be included in the newly-made music.
