Classical songs, including gagok, gasa, and sijo, are enjoyed by the literati.
The gagok
The gagok is a long lyrical song cycle composed on 27 songs. There are two modes; ujo(comparable to Western major mode) and gyemyeonjo(comparable to Western minor mode). The gagok is sung by male or female singers. The gagok is accompanied by the geomun-go, gayageum, piri, daegeum, haegeum, danso, and janggo.
The gasa is a lyrical song. It is usually accompanied only by the janggo. When other wind instruments accompany the song, they follow the melody of the song. There are twelve repertories in the gasa. The sijo is a short song sung by amateur singers. There are many kinds of sijo; pyeong("normal") sijo, jireum sijo, jungheori sijo, saseol jireum sijo, and yeokkeum jireum sijo(also called sujapka). The sijo normally is accompanied only by the janggo.
