The sanjo, meaning scattered melodies, is a solo instrumental music with a janggo accompaniment.
The sanjo
The sanjo was developed by the sinawi musicians in order to express their musical creativity on a single instrument. Thus, the sanjo is a improvised music as its literally meaning, scattered melodies, implies.
The sanjo begins with a slow tempo, called jinyangjo, and accelerates to faster tempos of jungmori, jungjungmori, and jajinmori in their order. The gayageum which can play faster tempos has hwimori, danmori, and sesanjosi. The musical form, beginning with a slow tempo to accelerates to the fast tempo, is one of the most important traits of Hanguk-eumak.
