  • You can appreciate Korean traditional music only as much as you understand it.
The National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts (NCKTPA), the Mecca for the country’s Korean traditional music
Korean traditional music is music that promotes the participation of the audience. In the course of a Korean traditional music performance, the audiences are likely to encourage the performers with a cheer and dance joyfully to the music. The NCKTPA’s performance halls are great places for family outings.
The National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts
Opened in 1951 and located in Seocho-gu, Seoul, the NCKTPA is one of the country's leading national traditional music institutions. It has two performance halls (named Yeakdang and Umyeondang) plus an outdoor stage (named Byeolmajiteo). Yeakdang displays the traditional beauty unique to Korea. The stage designed to imitate the performance hall where music was played in the olden days, the partitioned sections accommodating some 800 guests shaped like a wall, and the shield-shaped kite shaped sound panels all reflect that this hall is a performance hall for traditional music
Umyeon-dang, a 370-seat theater, features the short distance between the stage and audience designed to create a more intimate setting. It is an ideal hall for performances of traditional music and dance, and re-production of traditional banquets as well as various performances. Byeolmajiteo, a 2,000-seat outdoor stage surrounded by Mountain Umyeonsan has become a great place for family outings, allowing families to enjoy various performances from spring to fall.
